30ft x 15ft 'O' gauge Lionel layout

This layout was custom built for a client. It was modelled after Canadian Pacific Railways Calgary to Vancouver track system which runs through the Rocky Mountains of Western Canada.

The layout measures 30ft x 15ft and includes two 8ft helixes, one of which is the spiral tunnel in the Kicking Horse Pass.

Another of the main features of this project is a 4ft drawbridge that opens in the middle of the span to provide the operator with access to the computer control system in the centre of the layout.

This is a one-of-a-kind bridge that has been made completely from sheet brass and is operated by a custom designed gear system which is tied to the control computer.

The digital control system is from Zimo in Austria and the control software is from STP in Germany.

The layout included a model of Banff Springs Hotel which was made from 3D laser-cut components. Stoney Creek Bridge, the world famous arced bridge in Rogers Pass, was also modelled entirely from brass.

The Lionel AC locomotive motors were modified to operate on DC. The entire system can be operated under computer control or run manually with the push of a button. It's even possible to use both methods simultaneously.
